Christmas and New Year's Eve Party Games for Adults: 16 Ideas

Gift games, quizzes, table games and New Year's Eve countdown ideas that work with colleagues, friends and family — each with quick rules and what you need.

How to pick the right games

Choose games that take 10 to 20 minutes, work with people who don't know each other well and need little preparation. Plan two or three for the evening, not ten, and never push anyone to join.

Mix one active game, one quiz and one gift game. Put everything you need — dice, sticky notes, a timer, small prizes — on the bring list so it doesn't get forgotten.

Gift games

White elephant (Yankee swap): everyone brings one wrapped gift within a set budget. Players draw numbers; on your turn you open a new gift or steal an opened one. A gift can be stolen at most twice. Works for 8 to 30 people.

Dice gift game: gifts lie in the middle. Roll a six and take one; when every gift is taken, set a 5-minute timer — now a six lets you steal. When the timer rings, everyone keeps what they hold.

Secret Santa: draw names a few weeks before and exchange gifts at the party. A Secret Santa generator sends each person only their own match, so even the organizer can join.

Christmas quiz and guessing games

Christmas song quiz: play the first five seconds of a Christmas song; teams write down title and artist. Ten songs make a good round.

Guess the jar: fill a jar with chocolates or cookies. Everyone writes a guess; the closest wins the jar.

Christmas movie charades: write film titles on slips. One person mimes, their team guesses within a minute.

Table games

Who am I?: write Christmas characters on sticky notes (Grinch, Rudolph, Kevin from Home Alone) and stick one on each forehead. Ask yes-or-no questions until you guess yourself.

Napkin drawing: one person draws a Christmas term on a napkin, the others guess. No letters, no numbers, 60 seconds per drawing.

Two truths and a lie, holiday edition: everyone tells three holiday stories, one is made up. The table votes.

Active games

Snowball relay: teams carry cotton balls on a spoon to a bowl and back. The first team to fill its bowl wins.

Wrap the tree: in pairs, one person wraps the other in crepe paper or toilet paper as a Christmas tree within two minutes. The group votes for the best tree.

New Year's Eve games

Resolution guessing: everyone writes a New Year's resolution anonymously. Read them aloud; the group guesses who wrote which.

Year-in-review quiz: ten questions about what happened in the year — in the world and in your group.

Countdown balloons: put a small task in each balloon (sing a song, tell a story, make a toast). Pop one every hour until midnight.

Wax pouring: melt candle wax, pour it into cold water and read the shape as a prediction for the new year — a safe alternative to the old lead pouring.

Plan the games together with the party

Games fail most often because something is missing: the dice, the sticky notes or the speaker. Add the supplies to your party's bring list and let guests claim them, just like the snacks and drinks.
